Service and Software Sunset Schedule

The policy for minimum software versions at Stanford is N-2, which is the current version plus the two most recently supported versions available. At times, a particular service may have different needs and risks. In these instances, the service owner is empowered to establish a more stringent policy to ensure that the software used in their service is up-to-date and secure.

Below is a sunset schedule for prominent University IT services and other widely used software at Stanford.

Service / Software Sunset Date Notes
Cisco AnyConnect VPN March 31, 2024 On March 31, 2024, Cisco will end software and security updates and support for its AnyConnect client. Cisco has replaced its AnyConnect client with its Secure Client. Starting March 14, 2024, client software upgrade is available by manual download and will be offered to those with the app when they connect to the Stanford Public VPN.
WebAFS Early 2024 WebAFS, a web-based interface that allows file access to Andrew File Storage (AFS), is sunsetting on Jan. 7, 2024. The AFS platform itself is not affected and continues to be fully supported by University IT. While WebAFS will no longer be available, other alternatives will continue to be made available, such as 1) SecureFTP client or 2) installing the AFS client on your system.
SWDE & Device Enrollment Early 2024 SWDE and Device Enrollment will be discontinued by early 2024, making way for our new and improved replacement service, Stanford Device Registration (SDR).
MacOS 11 (Big Sur) Feb 1, 2024 MacOS 11 (Big Sur) will be sunset.  Continuing forward when new macOS versions are released, n-3 versions will be sunset 4 months later (rounded to the end of the month).
iOS prior to 15.0 Feb 1, 2024 iOS 17 was released in Sept. 2023.  We are adhering to a practice of supporting the current and previous two major versions of operating systems in order to ensure they remain actively patched and have the modern capabilities that we rely on.  Continuing forward when new macOS versions are released, n-3 versions will be sunset 4 months later (rounded to the end of the month).
Certain Oct. 25, 2023 Stanford’s use of Certain will end when its contract expires Oct. 25, 2023. UIT is replacing Certain with a more flexible and comprehensive events management platform—Cvent. Please refer to this article and the Cvent service page for more information.
TLS 1.0/1.1 support for Duo HTTP API June 30, 2023 After June 30, 2023, TLS 1.0 and 1.1 connection requests to Duo will not receive a response, resulting in blocked multi-factor authentication. See this article for details.

Stanford University Box February 28, 2023 UIT has retired the Stanford Box service after taking will steps to significantly reduce the usage of Stanford University Box over a three-year period.  Importantly, this transition only applies to Stanford University Box, not Medicine Box. See the "Three-Year Plan to Reduce Use of Stanford Box" article.

Privileged Admin Workstation (PAW) SecOps VPN Aug 1, 2022 Discontinuing PAW VPN. Ring 1 PAWs to transition to Cardinal Protect and Ring 0 PAWs to Global Protect
MacOS 10.14 (Mojave) May 1, 2022 MacOS 12.0 (Monterey) was released in October 2021.  We are adhering to a practice of supporting the current and previous two major versions of operating systems in order to ensure they remain actively patched and have the modern capabilities that we rely on.  On this date, MacOS 10.14 (Mojave) will be sunsetted.
Carbon Black Application Control (Bit9) April 30, 2022 Discontinuing Carbon Black Application Control (Bit9) subscription.  Will be replaced with CrowdStrike (see new Advanced Endpoint Protection service page).

Cisco AnyConnect July 15, 2021 TLS 1.0/1.1 support on the VPN will terminate for security reasons affecting all Cisco AnyConnect clients using below version 4.7. We recommend upgrading to the latest version available on the VPN service page: https://uit.stanford.edu/service/vpn
Stanford Secure SSID March 22, 2021 University IT is consolidating wireless networks to simplify the user experience.  The original encrypted wireless network (“Stanford Secure”) will be replaced by eduroam.  Cardinal Key is now supported for eduroam access (must use a Cardinal Key issued after Jan 1, 2021). ESET Anti-malware for Mac OS December 5, 2020 Discontinuing Stanford's ESET subscription.  Will be replaced with CrowdStrike (see new Advanced Endpoint Protection service page).
iOS prior to 12.0 September 1, 2020 iOS 14 was released in September 2020.  In order to support the industry-imposed deadline to support two-step authentication for email access, clients must use iOS 12 or later.  For more information, see the "Surge in Phishing" article published in December 2019
Form Builder July 30, 2020 UIT will replace Form Builder with a more modern, secure, and easily-managed web forms service. Please refer to the Web Content Management Program website for more information

Windows 7 January 16, 2020 Microsoft will no longer provide security updates for Windows 7 after January 14, 2020. MyDevices will begin marking Windows 7 devices as non-compliant on December 17, 2019 to ensure that these devices have been upgraded by the Microsoft deadline. To facilitate upgrades, Windows 10 has a built-in mechanism for running applications that were designed for previous versions of Windows.
Windows Server 2008 January 14, 2020 End of extended support by Microsoft.
BlueJeans August 31, 2019 UIT will retire the BlueJeans service at the end of the academic year and encourages the use of Zoom, the recommended video collaboration platform at Stanford.

SCEP Anti-malware for MacOS January 1, 2019 SCEP no longer provides anti-malware updates for Mac computers. For Macs running OS X 10.9 and later, ESET replaces Microsoft’s System Center Endpoint Protection (SCEP) anti-malware solution. For additional information see the UIT news article.
